Multi-functional bis(alkynyl)gold(iii) N⁁C complexes with distinct mechanochromic luminescence and electroluminescence properties

Abstract: A new class of highly luminescent bis(alkynyl)gold(iii) N⁁C complexes has been utilized as emissive materials in OLEDs and exhibits mechanochromic behaviors.

“…All the complexes show weak diffractions in the ground PXRD pattern (3G‐6G) as compared with those of the unground samples. The decrease in intensity and the presence of some ambiguous peaks in the PXRD spectra of the ground samples (3G‐6G) suggest a change of the crystalline phase toward a microcrystalline and amorphous phase . To confirm our hypothesis we dissolved the complexes in DCM and dried the solution quickly so that they could form only microcrystalline and amorphous solids instead of crystals.…”

“…Luminescent materials (or luminogens) sensitive to mechanical stimuli have attracted burgeoning interest owing to their promising applications in optical storage, mechanical sensors, security systems, optoelectronic devices, etc. 1 14 The mechanochromic properties of organic molecules are mainly governed by the molecular packing in the condensed state. 7 , 8 , 12 , 15 37 However, most of the luminogens in the condensed state suffer from the destructive aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) effect.…”

“…[1b,d,2,14] Chen et al [3a] reported that the external pressure induced the contraction of Ag-Cu/ Ag separations in the Ag 12 Cu 2 clusters and consequently the increased intramolecular Ag-Cu and Ag-Ag contacts,t hus leaded to PL shift. Meanwhile,Y amsgroup [15] suggested that the MFC of gold (III) complexes may resulted from the morphological transitions from crystalline to amorphous state.A sf or C-dots,i tw as reported that the PL was related to size, [16] zigzag site, [17] conjugated system, [18] and surface state. [10b, 19] Thepressure-induced dramatic blue-shift of PL in C-dots was attributed to the changes of emission-related structures.Pressure, asaunique thermodynamic variable, can lead to ac lose packing and reduce the interatomic/intermolecular distances.Inour previous work, [10b,20] we revealed that the surface state is strongly dependent on the carbonyl and pelectron system.…”
