A geophysical electromagnetic method to inductively measure the ground electrical resistivity and induced polarization has recently been tested. Its basic characteristics involve three major differences from other methods: the two electrical ground parameters are obtained through measuring magnetic field. For this purpose, a transmitter–receiver (T, R) electromagnetic system is used that operates in the frequency domain and consists of a horizontal loop as the transmitter for the perpendicular loops configuration on the ground surface; the measured function is the (T, R) inductive coupling main variation produced due to the presence of the earth, that is the magnetic field radial component; the measurements are conducted at a large number of frequencies (139 in the more advanced prototype), and the measured function is explored in the frequency interval 0.2 Hz to 1 kHz, a much broader frequency range of the induced polarization effect spectrum, than the one conventionally used in field exploration. Three major aspects are emphasized: (1) the existence of a small ‘main zone’ interior to a half‐space, which is responsible for most of the magnetic energy that the receiver measures on the half‐space surface. This permits to substitute the entire half‐space by the ‘main zone’ and, in a second step, to substitute the ‘main zone’ by an equivalent homogeneous half‐space with the electrical characteristics of such ‘main zone’; (2) the existence of a closed solution for the fields that the (T, R) system generates on the surface of a homogeneous isotropic half‐space, which provides exact functions with the two electrical parameters of interest as the variables (the apparent resistivity and relative polarization parameter); (3) the values of the electrical parameters so determined can be attributed to the central point of the ‘main zone’. Three‐horizontal layers half‐space and a conductive sphere in the free‐space are discussed as models. Four field surveys are analysed as examples and show a satisfactory performance of the method for detection of on‐shore hydrocarbon reservoirs, description of induced reservoir variations and structural features mapping at depths up to 2.5 km.

ABSTRACT. This paper deals with the analysis of the relationship between the petrophysical coefficients and the shape of the curves of phase and amplitude of a "spectral conductivity" function (Dias' model) proposed to describe the electrical behaviour of rocks exhibiting the effect of induced electrical polarization. It starts with the development of the "total current conductivity" function set by this model and the petrophysical concepts attributed to its 5 parameters. The generated curves span all possibilities offered by the model and show that up to 2 peaks of phase and 3 plateaux in the amplitude of the conductivity can be provided. Such characteristic confers to the model a relatively great versatility for describing experimental data. The analysis of the possible combinations of the values of the 4 petrophysical parameters -with σ 0 being used only as a normalizing parameter for σ -shows the influence of each parameter on the function and a correlation connecting them, evidencing the degree of the function sensitivity to its parameters' value intervals.Keywords: petrophysics, induced polarization, electroconductivity, spectral conductivity, Dias' model. RESUMO.Analisa-se, neste trabalho, a relação dos coeficientes petrofísicos com a forma das curvas de fase e amplitude da função "condutividade espectral" (modelo de Dias), descritiva do comportamento elétrico de rochas que apresentam o efeito de polarização elétrica induzida (efeito IP, do inglês electrical "induced polarization" ). Inicia-se pelo desenvolvimento da função "condutividade de corrente total" do modelo e a conceituação do significado petrofísico de seus 5 parâmetros.As curvas geradas cobrem a totalidade das possibilidades oferecidas pelo modelo e mostram que podem existir até 2 picos na fase e até 3 patamares na amplitude da condutividade. Esta versatilidade confere ao modelo um maior potencial para descrever dados experimentais. A análise detalhada das possíveis combinações de valores entre os seus 4 parâmetros petrofísicos -sendo σ 0 usado apenas como parâmetro de normalização da função σ -indica a influência de cada parâmetro na função e a existência de correlação entre eles, assim como, mostra o grau de sensibilidade da função associado aos diversos intervalos de valores dos seus parâmetros.Palavras-chave: petrofísica, polarização induzida, eletrocondutividade, condutividade espectral, modelo de Dias.

We present the numerical modeling of the fields from a very large circular loop of current, over a two-dimensional earth. This source is used in the Electromagnetic Multi-Frequency Method, a new method aimed at the geophysical prospecting for oil and other mineral deposits reaching depths of a few kilometers. The loops used in this method have radii of hundreds of meters. We have employed finite elements in a 2.5D formulation to calculate the radial magnetic field generated by such a source on the surface of the terrain. The EMMF method measures the field at distances of up to 10km from the source. Our results illustrate the capability of those measurements to detect the inhomogeneities in the stratified earth.
