Multi-element gas sensor based on surface plasmon resonance: recognition of alcohols by using calixarene films

Abstract: Abstract. This work is devoted to development of a multi-element gas sensor based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) to recognize some alcohols. As sensitive layers capable to change their optical properties when interacting with volatile alcohol molecules, we investigated bulk-porous sorbents -calixarenes (tret-butyl-calix[4,6,8]. Each calixarene was studied to obtain its kinetic concentration SPR characteristics for interaction with ethanol, isopropanol and penthanol vapors. To realize SPR measurements, the … Show more

“…These processes cause degradation of the sensitive element as well as to distorsions of measurement results as a consequence of changing the physical characteristics both of analyte and PCL. To enhance the sensitivity and selectivity of SPR sensors, they use additional organic polymer layers of calixarenes, polymethylmetacrylate, alkanthiols, complex oxides etc [48][49][50].…”

“…Then the total volume of cavities in 1 cm 2 of the film is V 0 = M4r 3 /3. Due to the adsorption the volume of cavities decreases by the volume of adsorbed layer with the thickness  Then the cavities volume at equilibrium becomes M a n u s c r i p t (8) It was previously demonstrated in the work on development of multielement gas sensor consisting of the investigated calixarene films and surface plasmon resonance based optical transducer [17], that the dependencies of equilibrium surface concentrations of ethanol on the partial vapor pressure are approximately linear. This means that the adsorbate monolayer is not formed even at the saturated vapor pressure, i.e.…”

“…Various principles of sensor arrays organization can be used [12], utilizing different physical transducers. Sensor systems based upon the measurement of electroconductive polymers conductivity [13], quartz crystal resonator frequency [14][15][16], and various optical characteristics of thin films (optical absorption, reflection, diffusion or luminescence, using interference or resonance properties) [17][18][19] were reported in literature. At the present time, optical sensor systems are among the most promising from the standpoint of research interest and introduction into wide practice.…”
