Multi-elastic Datacenters: Auto-scaled Virtual Clusters on Energy-Aware Physical Infrastructures

Abstract: Computer clusters are widely used platforms to execute different computational workloads. Indeed, the advent of virtualization and Cloud computing has paved the way to deploy virtual elastic clusters on top of Cloud infrastructures, which are typically backed by physical computing clusters. In turn, the advances in Green computing have fostered the ability to dynamically power on the nodes of physical clusters as required. Therefore, this paper introduces an open-source framework to deploy elastic virtual clus… Show more

“…Furthermore, when there are wasted resources too much time, the nodes are suspended (or eliminated). The architecture uses IM and CLUES which has proven a good scalability [26] and the capability to work with unplanned workloads [16]. The proposed architecture are not only related to the execution of batch jobs, it provides to developers a workflow to ease the building, testing, delivery and version management of their application.…”

“…CLUES (CLUster elasticity system) 27 is an elasticity system for high performance computing clusters and cloud infrastructures. Its main function is to deploy cluster nodes on the cloud when they are needed via dynamic provisioning and automated integration in the LRMS and, conversely, to terminate them when they have been idle longer than a certain time.…”

“…-IM (Infrastructure Manager) [16], a TOSCAcompliant [46] Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tool to deploy complex customized virtualised infrastructures on the major on-premises and public Infrastructure as a Service providers. -CLUES (CLUster Elasticity System) [3], an elasticity manager that allows virtual clusters to grow and shrink in terms of the number of nodes. It has plugins for popular systems such as Kubernetes, Apache Mesos, SLURM, etc.…”
