Abstract: Open ocean areas surrounded by sea ice and maintained by ocean heat, or sensible‐heat polynyas, are linked to key ice‐sheet processes, such as ice‐shelf basal melt and ice‐shelf fracture, when they occur near ice‐shelf fronts.
