Multi-decadal atmospheric and marine climate variability in southern Iberia during the mid- to late-Holocene

Abstract: Abstract. To assess the regional multi-decadal to multi-centennial climate variability along the southern Iberian Peninsula during the mid- to late-Holocene record of paleo-environmental indicators from marine sediments were established for two sites in the Alboran Sea (ODP-161-976A) and the Gulf of Cádiz (GeoB5901-2). High-resolution records of organic geochemical properties and planktic foraminiferal assemblages are used to decipher precipitation and vegetation changes as well as hydrological conditions with… Show more

“…Furthermore, the pervasiveness of the 4.2 ka climate anomaly in Europe (e.g. Bini et al, 2019;Isola et al, 2019;Schirrmacher et al, 2019) suggests a common forcing. Based on our study, increased TSI values and likely NAO positive conditions (e.g.…”

“…Bakke et al, 2010, Le Roy et al, 2017 from southern Europe and the Mediterranean the climate oscillation is rather known because of prominent drought phases (e.g. Weiss and Bradley, 2001, Staubwasser and Weiss, 2006, Migowski et al, 2006, Cheng et al, 2010, Schirrmacher et al, 2019. A prominent dry phase was also reconstructed from the lake level of Lake Balqash (Kremenetski, 1997) and through pollen studies for the research region in the period from ca.…”

“…4300-3800 cal. BP) [76][77][78][79][80] provide a favorable setting for fire spread as suggested by the Brezoso and, to a lesser extent, the Viñuelas charcoal records [76][77][78]. Indeed, the largest CHAR values of the last 4000 years are recorded at Brezoso from 3900 to 3800 cal.…”
