Multi-criteria Content Adaptation Service Selection Broker

Abstract: In this paper, we propose a service-oriented content adaptation framework and an approach to the Content Adaptation Service Selection (CASS) problem. In particular, the problem is how to assign adaptation tasks (e.g., transcoding, video summarization, etc) together with respective content segments to appropriate adaptation services. Current systems tend to be mostly centralized suffering from single point failures. The proposed algorithm consists of a greedy and single objective assignment function that is con… Show more

“…Online documents are becoming increasingly rich in content and varied in format and style, however are naturally made-up of media objects of different types with complicated structure and layout [1]. At the same time, clients' browsing devices are getting increasingly varied in their capabilities (e.g., processing power, input and output facilities).…”

“…We refer to the layered reference architecture of the service-oriented content adaptation (SOCA) scheme presented in [1]. The framework consists of components that provide access to content servers, formulate user request to source format, manage and provide content description (meta-data).…”

“…One of the solutions to this challenge is content adaptation. Content adaptation ( Figure 1) has been an attractive solution for the ever-growing desktop-based Web content delivered to the user via heterogeneous devices [10][11][12][13][14][15] in order to provide an acceptable experience while surfing the Web and at the same time reducing energy consumption [16,17]. It is proven that content adaptation mechanisms have the capability to prolong battery life of the multimedia streaming clients [7,17,18].…”

“…The purpose of the SOCA framework is to give out user expectation by offering added value of content and also to provide flexible and scalable service-based content delivery mechanism. The framework consists of components that provide access to content servers, develop user request to source format, manage and provide content description (Fudzee, Abawajy, & Deris, 2010) Commonly, SOCA enables an adapted content to be delivery by a number of services; service composition based on quality of service (QoS) is known to be a practical solution. Hence, response time is one of the qualities of service (QoS) to be considered in assessing the deliverability of content adaptation services.…”
