Multi-country loss rates of honey bee colonies during winter 2016/2017 from the COLOSS survey

Abstract: The Strathprints institutional repository (https://strathprints.strath.ac.uk) is a digital archive of University of Strathclyde research outputs. It has been developed to disseminate open access research outputs, expose data about those outputs, and enable the management and persistent access to Strathclyde's intellectual output.

“…The Western honey bee, Apis mellifera , Linnaeus , is a particularly important species for providing pollination services globally (Calderone, ; Hung, Kingston, Albrecht, Holway, & Kohn, ). However, managed honey bees have been facing severe colony losses in recent decades (Brodschneider et al, ; Jacques et al, ; Neumann & Carreck, ; Van Engelsdorp & meixner, ). Even though the number of managed honey bee colonies is increasing globally, the demand for pollination is growing at a much higher rate (Aizen & Harder, ; Gallai, Salles, Settele, & Vaissière, ).…”

“…The Netherlands is not represented in the map, as the data did not allow calculation of overall loss rate at country or regional level, and hence the relative risk was unavailable. reported in Brodschneider et al (2018). Responses with insufficient or illogical answers were excluded, but for most countries these were a relatively small part of their data-set.…”

“…is one of the most important insect pollinators of monoculture food crops worldwide, adding over $15 billion in economic value to agriculture each year in the United States and more than 200 billion worldwide (Klein et al , 2007; Gallai et al , 2009; Meixner, 2010). However, global honey bee populations have undergone elevated colony losses during the last decade (Zee et al , 2014; Brodschneider et al , 2016; Brodschneider et al , 2018). Honey bees are exposed to a wide range of pesticides while foraging in the field or consuming contaminated food stocked in the hive, such as the widely used neonicotinoid insecticides.…”
