Multi-component hybrid organic–inorganic particles with highly dispersed silver nanoparticles in the external shell

Abstract: Complex hybrid organic-"multi inorganic" particles SiO2 PDCL-ZrO2 (Ag SiO2) (PDCL = poly(N-dicarbazolyl-lysine)) were synthesized stepwise from silica nanoparticles. First, the zirconia units were synthesized by sol-gel processing and anchored to the polyCOOH poly(dicarbazole-lysine) shell of pre-formed silica particles through metal coordination on residual COOH groups. Investigation of the particle morphology indicated a core-shell structure. A second sol-gel reaction was then carried out at the surface of t… Show more

“…Accordingly, it enables the formation of the corresponding outer inorganic shell around the polymer layer (Scheme 1 B). Those particles have an average diameter of 150-200 nm [11]. In contrast, the silicon alkoxide precursors are unreactive toward the PDCL carboxylic acid groups and condense slowly enough to be able to migrate through the polymer layer, and condense onto the silica core surface, thus increasing the size of the inner silica particle (Scheme 1 A).…”

“…In previous work we described the preparation of three-or fourcomponent core-shell-shell silica-based particles starting from SiO 2 @ poly((S)-N-dicarbazolyl-lysine) (PDCL) particles with a 50 nm silica core [10,11]. The polymeric PDCL layer possesses pending carboxylic acid groups.…”

“…In recent years, the synthesis of hybrid inorganic–organic polymers and their potential applications from catalysis to optics have been amply studied with a view to preparing materials with enhanced mechanical, magnetic and thermal properties 1–9. The final architecture can be controlled and a homogeneous dispersion of the inorganic components in the organic matrix can be achieved by means of well‐defined reaction steps from molecular level onwards.…”

“…[188] 4.2.6 Photochemical method Certain metal precursors can be reduced under UV irradiation. This process is often assisted by semiconductors, [189][190][191][192] which provide electrons generated after light induced excitation. Reduction of alkylpyridinium Au 3+ complexes under UV irradiation provides Au particles, whereby size, shape, and morphology are strongly dependent on the physical state of the complex.…”
