Multi‐Compartment Unimolecular Micelles from (ABC)n Multi‐Arm Star Triblock Terpolymers

Abstract: Four linear and four star equimolar terpolymers based on non‐ionic hydrophilic methoxy hexa(ethylene glycol) methacrylate, ionizable hydrophilic 2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate and neutral hydrophobic methyl methacrylate were synthesized using group transfer polymerization and investigated in aqueous dilute solutions. It was found that the (ABC)n multi‐arm star terpolymers formed unimolecular micelles comprising three centrosymmetric compartments. The position of each compartment could be determined by the… Show more

“…The peak on the left (of higher MWs) corresponds to the star polymer while the peak on the right represents the linear precursor that was not interconnected to the star polymer. This was expected for an “arm‐first” star polymer synthesis and it has been observed before . At this point we would like to point out that, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that a TMSPMA containing star polymer has been synthesized with the TMSPMA units being intact.…”

“…Therefore, there have been many studies on the design and synthesis of amphiphilic dendritic polymers as nanomaterials, such as a drug delivery agent, [5][6][7][8][9][10] nanoreactors, [11][12][13][14] and nanocapsules. [15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23] For example, Fréchet et al…”

“…A series of potentially pH responsive star terpolymers bearing a large number of ABC triblock terpolymer arms, each composed of the non-ionic hydrophilic methoxy hexa(ethylene glycol)methacrylate (HEGMA), the ionizable hydrophilic DMAEMA, and the neutral hydrophobic MMA, emanating from a common nodule, were synthesized using group transfer polymerization and studied in aqueous media [61]. The uniqueness of these stars is that their behavior is significantly affected by the block topology of the arms.…”
