Due to the extensive use of antimicrobial agents in human and veterinary medicine, residues of various antimicrobials get into wastewater and, subsequently, surface water. On the one hand, a combination of processes in wastewater treatment plants aims to eliminate chemical and biological pollutants; on the other hand, this environment may create conditions suitable for the horizontal transfer of resistance genes and potential selection of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Wastewater and surface water samples (Morava River) were analyzed to determine the concentrations of 10 antibiotics and identify those exceeding so-called predicted no-effect environmental concentrations (PNECs). This study revealed that residues of five of the tested antimicrobials, namely ampicillin, clindamycin, tetracycline, tigecycline and vancomycin, in wastewater samples exceeded the PNEC. Vancomycin concentrations were analyzed with respect to the detected strains of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE), in which the presence of resistance genes, virulence factors and potential relationship were analyzed. VRE were detected in 16 wastewater samples (11%) and two surface water samples (6%). The PNEC of vancomycin was exceed in 16% of the samples. Since the detected VRE did not correlate with the vancomycin concentrations, no direct relationship was confirmed between the residues of this antimicrobials and the presence of the resistant strains.

Aquaculture is a growing industry with a high demand mainly due to its significant contribution to the food sector. One of the main challenges of aquaculture is the prevention and treatment of fish diseases through the extensive application of antibiotics. However, information on the various consequences of pharmaceuticals in fish farms remains limited to this day. Based on the existing scientific literature, this report aims to give an overview of the most commonly used antibiotics in aquaculture, which belong to the groups of quinolones, sulfonamides, tetracyclines, amphenicols and macrolides. This review paper summarizes the information available on the characterization, ecotoxicology and application of florfenicol, erythromycin, furazolidone, oxolinic acid, ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, sulfadiazine, sulfadimethoxine, sulfamethoxazole, oxytetracycline and tetracycline.

Urban freshwater ecosystems receive a wide array of organic pollutants through wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) discharges and agricultural runoff. Evaluating the fate and effects of antibiotics and pesticides can be a challenging task, especially the effects on freshwater vertebrates because of their abilities to metabolize and excrete these chemicals, and because of their high mobility and escape behavior when exposed to stressful environmental conditions. In the present study, 37 wild gudgeons (Gobio gobio) were caged for a period of up to 20 days, upstream and downstream of a WWTP effluent discharge in the Orge River (a tributary of the Seine River, France). The pesticides and antibiotics’ levels were weekly monitored in the fish muscles and compared to environmental contamination (water and sediments). Our results highlighted a slight impregnation of pesticides in the gudgeon muscles, at the downstream site, after 20 days of exposure. Concerning antibiotics, ofloxacin was the most detected compound in fish muscles (85% of occurrence) and ranged from undetectable to 8 ng.g‐1 dry weight. Antibiotic levels in fish muscle were not higher at the downstream site and did not increase with exposure duration, despite high levels in the water (up to 29 times greater than upstream). Potential ecotoxicological effects were also evaluated: body condition did not differ between the caging location and exposure time. Three oxidative status markers in the fish livers showed significant shifts after 14 days of caging. Our results suggest a high clearance rate of antibiotics and to a lesser extent, of pesticides in wild gudgeons, which could be explained by changes in xenobiotic metabolism with pollutant exposure.
