Multi-Agent Systems and Digital Twins for Smarter Cities

Abstract: An intelligent combination of the Internet of Things (IoT) and approaches to modeling and simulation is one of the most challenging endeavors for future cities, manufacturing industries, and predictive maintenance. Digital Twins take on a unique role here. However, the question of what a Digital Twin is and what differentiates it from a regular model is still open. We present an experimental setup for integrating an existing simulation model of Hamburg's traffic system with the city's real-time sensor network.… Show more

“…Thus, a digital twin is a digital representation of a product, process or service used to monitor, analyze, and improve its performance; "a bridge between the physical and digital world". The drivers of the development of the city's digital twins are technologies of "Big Data" and the "Internet of Things" (IoT) [15].…”

“…This approach aims at achieving equivalence by directly replicating sensor data into the model. The sensor data may be used to update the state of the model either at a fixed frequency [2] or dependent on the availability of data or event [14,37]. The aim is to ensure the state of the model reflect that of the real system.…”

“…Finally, a previous work of co-authors [9] builds agent-based DTs for the healthcare domain. In [8] instead, a whole MAS is used to implement the DT of a whole city transportation system. A similar approach is taken in reference [40] to realise the concept of "communicating material" in the energy supply business domain.…”
