Multi-actor perspectives on afforestation and reforestation strategies in Central Europe under climate change

Abstract: HAL is a multi-disciplinary open access archive for the deposit and dissemination of scientific research documents, whether they are published or not. The documents may come from teaching and research institutions in France or abroad, or from public or private research centers. L'archive ouverte pluridisciplinaire HAL, est destinée au dépôt et à la diffusion de documents scientifiques de niveau recherche, publiés ou non, émanant des établissements d'enseignement et de recherche français ou étrangers, des labor… Show more

“…Out of the individuals interviewed, 93.9% feel that there is climate change. This value is higher than those reported by previous studies from similar lines of research (Hazarika et al, 2021). The higher number in Meenangadi may be due to the fact that Wayanad has been declared a climate change hotspot (Four Districts Categorised as Climate Change Hotspots-The Hindu, 2015) and has been affected by floods and landslides in recent years, moreover, the ongoing carbon neutral programme has given wide awareness about the causes and effects of climate change among the local community.…”

“…Afforestation can transform vulnerable forests into diverse, productive, and climate-resilient forests (Bolte et al, 2009;Reyer et al, 2015). Afforestation also entails the active involvement of actors from forestry, conservation, and nursery business (Hazarika et al, 2021). Furthermore, forest services are changed from an industrial one, focusing on timber production, to a postindustrial one, in which forest services become more important to timber production.…”

“…The selection of species and origins is seen as region-speci c measures (Nabuurs et al, 2015). Although it has been emphasized that local seed resources are used to minimize the possibility of incompatibility and promote adaptation in many regions of Europe, this is not su cient to increase adaptation in the ght against climate change, and more focus should be placed on increasing the genetic diversity of the seed source (Hazarika et al, 2021). However, there are gaps in knowledge and education on this topic, and it has not yet attracted international attention.…”
