MuLoG, or How to Apply Gaussian Denoisers to Multi-Channel SAR Speckle Reduction?

Abstract: Speckle reduction is a longstanding topic in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging. Since most current and planned SAR imaging satellites operate in polarimetric, interferometric, or tomographic modes, SAR images are multi-channel and speckle reduction techniques must jointly process all channels to recover polarimetric and interferometric information. The distinctive nature of SAR signal (complex-valued, corrupted by multiplicative fluctuations) calls for the development of specialized methods for speckle re… Show more

“…A suggestion would be to define a set of standardized test cases for interferogram filtering available to everyone that allows for the assessment and comparison of the performance of algorithms in the most relevant typical situations. Steps in this direction have already been taken by the authors of [115,117,118] by providing downloadable code for their algorithms and by [117] by also providing part of their test data.…”

“…An interesting new option is proposed in [118] under the name multichannel logarithm with Gaussian denoising (MuLoG). It transforms the field of sample covariance matrices of a stack of multichannel SAR data in such a way that denoising algorithms for additive white noise are applicable.…”

“…In this paper, the chosen filtering methods include (a) the refined Lee filter; (b) the iterative weight bilateral (ite-bilateral) filter according to the iterative filter weight of the spatial and polarimetric distances; (c) the nonlocal Lee (NL-Lee) filter based on the combination of the test statistics and the preselection; (d) the speckle reducing anisotropic diffusion (SRAD) filter by utilizing the partial differential equations [35][36][37][38]; (e) the MuLog-TV filter of the latest algorithm applying Gaussian denoisers [39]; and (f) the proposed CVPB-NLM filter method.…”

“…Many speckle reduction methods have been proposed in the recent reviews [14,15]. To reduce the influence of speckle and improve the efficiency of using SAR images, we apply multi-channel logarithm with Gaussian denoising (MuLoG) to process all SAR images [16]. In the comparison step, a suitable dissimilarity measure is used to compute the distance of two images.…”
