Mulligan's Mobilisation with Movement (MWM) Relieves Pain and Improves Functional Status in Osteoarthritis Knee

Abstract: Background: There are several manual therapy techniques for limited and painful knee flexion, but there are very few evidence about the effectiveness of Mulligan's Mobilisation With Movement (MWM) in osteoarthritis of the knee. The objective of the study was to find the effect of MWM on pain and functional status in patients with osteoarthritis knee. Methods: 30 patients diagnosed with medial compartment tibiofemoral osteoarthritis of the knee were randomized into two groups ( experimental and control groups ) … Show more

“…Brian Mulligan in 1984 described the mobilization with movement as a manual therapy technique for treating joint pain, stiffness, and dysfunction . [5] Using either the patient's active participation or the therapist's passive participation, this treatment involves the continuous application of a manual maneuver that applies "gliding" force to a joint with contemporaneous movement of the joint that occurs naturally (osteo-kinematically). [6].…”

“…The present study has the approval of the Institutional Local Ethical Committee and informed consent was obtained from all the subjects. The subjects had to meet the following inclusion criteria: age between 45 -70 years, 21 both male and female, unilateral knee OA according to Kellgren and Lawrence (K&L) grade ≥ 2, 22 pain and crepitus in the knee joint during knee movements, medial knee pain, duration of pain more than 2 months whereas exclusion criteria were patient have taken any intra-articular injection within 3 months, metallic implant around knee joint, suspicious of malignancy around knee joint, significant cardiovascular disease, knee injury.…”
