This article examines the Syeikh Muhammad Abduh's ideas on society, diagnoses of its problems and viable solutions. Central to this article's argument is the appropriation of Abduh into the list of thinkers found within the discipline of sociology that has been dominated by Europeans in his era. By highlighting several themes related to the challenges and anxieties faced by Muslim societies in facing up to Western modernity, which Abduh was much concerned with in his discourses, it is hoped that future scholars would re-examine his sociological thoughts in light of its significance towards fostering East-West intellectual symbiosis.

“…Kehadirannya disambut oleh Muhammad Abduh dengan menghadiri pertemuan-pertemuan ilmiah yang diadakan oleh al-Afghani.Perjumpaannya dengan Afghani ini, mempunyai implikasi yang sangat besar bagi perkembangan pemikiran rasional Abduh(Firdaus, 1979). Pertemuan dengan Jamaluddin al-Afghani ini yang banyak mempengaruhi kehidupan dan jalan berfikir dari seorang Muhammad Abduh sebagai tokoh modernisme Islam, kemudian dari sini juga dia banyak menulis kitab-kitab, seperti Risâlat al-Ãridah, disusul kemudian dengan Hasyiat Syarh al-Jalâl ad-Dawwâni li alAqâ'id adh-Adhûdhiyah(Ridha, 1931).Setelah lulus dari tingkat Alamiyah (sekarang Lc), dia mengabdikan diri pada al-Azhar dengan mengajar Manthiq (logika) dan ilmu al-Kalam (teologi), sedangkan di rumahnya dia mengajar pula kitab Tahdzîb al-Akhlâq, karangan Ibnu Miskawaih serta Islam untuk melepaskan diri dari dominasi luar, dengan tujuan menyatukan mereka (Amin A. , 1960)…”

Religion as a way to get to God makes people have different perspectives. This perspective does little to make humans have exclusive characteristics in religious life. This study aims to describe Muhammad Abduh's thoughts about the role of religion and education in national life. This study uses a qualitative approach with the method of literature (library research). Data collection techniques in this study used descriptive analysis methods by reading, understanding, studying and analyzing Muhammad Abduh's thoughts. The results of the study show that Muhammad Abduh places reason in its true position, namely reason is the main capital in carrying out religious and national life. As well as methods for developing good and right minds, one of which is through the educational process. So in the context of education, Muhammad Abduh gave an idea to adjust the fulfillment of learning material between the needs of the mind and the soul so that it becomes balanced and can obtain happiness in this world and in the hereafter.
