Mucosal Microbiome Profiles Polygenic Irritable Bowel Syndrome in Mestizo Individuals

Abstract: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is the most frequent functional gastrointestinal disorder, worldwide, with a high prevalence among Mestizo Latin Americans. Because several inflammatory disorders appear to affect this population, a further understanding of host genomic background variants, in conjunction with colonic mucosa dysbiosis, is necessary to determine IBS physiopathology and the effects of environmental pressures. Using a simple polygenic model, host single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and the taxono… Show more

“…In Cluster 3, Enterobacteria and other species were enriched in inflamed regions, as reported previously (27,28). The enrichment of Microbacterium in inflamed regions was detected as has been previously reported for IBD patients (29). Together, the abundance compositions of the top 50 taxa at the species level were similar between the inflamed regions of irAE and UC and the non-inflamed regions of irAE and UC, respectively.…”

“…Among the most abundant species identified were Alteromonas mediterranea , a seawater bacteria 26 and Falconid herpesvirus 1 , a herpesvirus reported to infect raptors, 27 and their presence in seminal plasma seems somewhat unlikely. Alteromonas mediterranea has previously been found in colon samples from patients with irritable bowel syndrome, 28 but to our knowledge Falconid herpesvirus 1 has not been reported in human samples before and could reflect external contamination. On the other hand, contamination with both species also seems unlikely since their normal habitation is far from a laboratory setting.…”
