Mucosal leishmaniasis due to Leishmania (Viannia) panamensis in Colombia: clinical characteristics.

Abstract: The Leishmaniases are a group of diseases whose clinical presentation is in part determined by the infecting species. Until recently, mucosal leishmaniasis was attributed exclusively to Leishmania (Viannia ) braziliensis; however, the capacity of other species of the subgenus Viannia to invade mucosal tissue has been documented. This report examines the clinical characteristics of 23 parasitologically diagnosed patients with mucosal leishmaniasis due to L. (V.) panamensis from the Pacific Coast of Colombia see… Show more

“…Clinical presentation and outcome of ATL are associated with the host immune response and the infecting Leishmania species (1,2). Among the different parasite species causing cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) in the New World, Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis is considered the most important because of its prevalence, its difficulty to cure, its public health importance, and the risk of severe disease, i.e., disfiguring mucosal leishmaniasis (ML) (2)(3)(4)(5)(6).…”

“…Por su parte, Leishmania (V) panamensis es la especie del parásito responsable del 95%, aproximadamente, de los casos que se registran en el país; produce principalmente LCL y, también, casos de LCD y LM (5,6). Además, L. (V) panamensis se caracteriza por producir infecciones crónicas y persistentes y está implicada también en la presentación de recaídas, reinfecciones y diseminación a mucosas (7,8).…”
