Mucormycosis: an unusual masquerader of an endobronchial tumour

Abstract: Pulmonary mucormycosis is a life‐threatening invasive fungal infection usually seen in the background of immunosuppression, haematological malignancies, or uncontrolled diabetes. Immunocompetent hosts can also be affected. Isolated endobronchial mucormycosis is rare with only a few cases reported in the literature. Here, we present a case of an endobronchial mass masquerading as a tumour that was later diagnosed as invasive mucormycosis by histopathological examination.

“…Infection primarily occurs by inhalation of its spores and inoculation into the respiratory tract [7] . The spores of mucorales show minimal pathogenicity in immunocompetent hosts because the macrophages can kill spores by phagocytosis and oxidative killing mechanisms.…”

“…Occasional mucormycosis cases have been reported in the literature that masquerades a tumor and thus raises awareness of the varied presentation of this infection. 12,13 Yang et al 14 reported a case of pulmonary mucormycosis in a 45-year-old immunocompetent man mimicking lung carcinoma. Similarly, Malek et al 15 also reported a case of fatal disseminated mucormycosis mimicking malignancy.…”

“…2 Some unusual sites like colon-mucormycosis of colon mimicking carcinoma colon bronchus-mimicking as endobronchial tumour have been seen. 3,4 However, isolated mucormycosis of upper lip (labium superius oris) without any bony invasion has not been reported in literature to the best of our knowledge. Hence this poses a diagnostic challenge.…”
