Mucocele: Two Case Reports

Abstract: The Mucocele or mucus retention phenomenon as it is called is a salivary gland lesion of traumatic origin which is formed when the main duct of a minor salivary gland in torn with subsequent extravasation of the mucus into the fibrous connective tissue so that a cyst like cavity is produced. The wall of this cavity is formed by compressed bundles of collagen fibrils and it is filled with mucin. Mucoceles are known to occur most commonly on the lower lip, followed by the floor of mouth and buccal mucosa being t… Show more

“…[ 7 8 ] Oral mucoceles can be single or multiple often rupturing and leaving slightly painful erosions that usually heal within few days. [ 12 ] The duration of lesion is not constant, from a few days to 3 years. The clinical presentation may vary depending on the depth of the lesion.…”

“…The surface of long-standing lesions may show fibrosis. [ 12 ] The superficial lesions appear as thin-walled, bluish swellings that rupture easily while the deeper lesions are well circumscribed swellings usually covered by normal appearing oral mucosa. [ 5 ]…”

“…Localization of these lesions is done by computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. High amylase and protein content can be revealed by the chemical analysis [ 8 ]. A histopathologic study is crucial to confirm the diagnosis which shows the presence of ductal epithelium, granulation tissue, pooling of mucin, and inflammatory cells.…”

“…Mechanical and physical trauma such as aggressive tooth brushing and lip biting habits are the main causes for occurrence of such lesions. [ 15 ] These lesions are devoid of epithelial lining and are also termed as superficial mucocele and/or classical mucocele. Surgical excision, marsupialization, micro-marsupialization, electrocautery, intralesional corticosteroid injection, and CO 2 laser ablation are some of the conventional methods that have been used and are still used for treatment of mucoceles.…”
