Mucocele-like tumor associated with ductal carcinoma in situ diagnosed as mucinous carcinoma by fine-needle aspiration cytology: report of a case

Abstract: Mucocele-like tumors (MLTs) of the breast are rare, with only 11 cases reported from Japan and 35 cases from other countries. MLTs of the breast were first described by Rosen in 1986. They are believed to be related to atypical ductal hyperplasia, ductal carcinoma, or mucinous carcinoma. It is difficult to diagnose this tumor preoperatively, and especially difficult to differentiate between benign and malignant forms. We report a case of MLT associated with ductal carcinoma in situ, which was initially diagnos… Show more

“…It is more difficult to make a definitive diagnosis in mucocele like tumors with concomitant atypical ductal hyperplasia or ductal carcinoma in situ, since the cellular polarity and atypia may be prominent, as in mucinous carcinoma. 2,10 Fat necrosis of the breast parenchyma may be misinterpreted as mucin. There is infiltration of histiocytes, multinucleated giant cells and degenerated RBCs in the intermediate stage of fat necrosis.…”

“…Other diagnostic techniques, such as fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC), are less favored than CNB because of the smaller tissue sample and reduced structural information about the lesion. Reports of identical mucin makeup, similar cytological appearance, and difficult representative sampling of the whole lesion associated with FNAC of MLLs and mucinous carcinoma have led to the misdiagnosis of mucinous carcinoma in an MLL on at least one occasion [11]. There remains much uncertainty in diagnosing MLLs by CNB and FNAC, and the standard practice remains the excision of suspected lesions.…”

“…Memenin mukosel benzeri lezyonu (MBL) 1986'da Rosen tarafından histolojik olarak memenin müsinöz karsinomuna benzeyen, ekstravaze müsin içeren benign bir lezyon olarak tarif edilmiştir (1). Daha sonraları duktal hiperplazi ya da karsinom ile ilişkili olarak da bildirilmiştir (2)(3)(4).…”
