Mucinous Cystic Neoplasms in Male Patients: Two Cases

Abstract: Mucinous cystic neoplasms (MCNs) of the pancreas in male patients are very rare. Though few cases of MCNs in male patients have been reported, it is difficult to reveal them preoperatively. The first patient was a 50-year-old man and was incidentally found to have a cystic mass of 51 mm in the tail of the pancreas. We performed a distal pancreatectomy. The second patient was a 73-year-old man, incidentally found to have a cystic mass of 25 mm in diameter in the tail of the pancreas and a carcinoma of the bile … Show more

“…Communication with the MPD is a critical distinguishing feature of pancreatic cysts (10). Similarly, the presence of a ductal communication may suggest a pseudocyst or walled-off necrosis in the setting of pancreatitis rather than other lesions such as MCN.…”

“…1 To date, studies have rarely shown that subclassification by morphological or molecular features correlates with prognosis. 2 However, in recent years treatment has evolved to include immunotherapy and targeted therapies; efficacy in PAIS remains uncertain, but such subclassification may prove to be beneficial for prognostic and predictive purposes. 3 Here we compare and contrast the morphological and molecular findings in three recent cases of PAIS at our institution, which demonstrate the variability seen in the context of a common clinical picture.…”

“…Hyperplasia of mesonephric remnants is usually an incidental finding but may rarely form a clinically evident mass. An exuberant, florid type of mesonephric proliferation may be confused with either mesonephric adenocarcinoma or well differentiated endocervical adenocarcinoma 2,3 and can be exceedingly difficult to distinguish from endocervical mesonephric adenocarcinoma. We present a case of a 52-year-old female with a diagnostically challenging mesonephric proliferation.…”
