Abstract: Mucin glycans are important component of the mucus barrier and vital defence against physical and chemical damage as well as pathogens. Abnormal expression of mucin glycans can lead to disease, especially cancer. Here, we first summarize the main types of glycosylation on mucins and the mechanisms by which abnormal mucin glycans occur. We next describe the role of ab-normal mucin glycans in cancer.
