Algorithms, taken in the first year of university, is one of the core courses of the computer science department. Traditional learning systems have some restrictions as they are teacher, class, and time‐based. However, distance education is one of the popular concepts of today since it has the flexibility of time and choice of location. Mobile learning, which is a subbranch of distance education provides users opportunities to learn through educational mobile applications. In the present study, an application to run on smart devices running the IOS operating system for engineering students to be used in supporting the basic algorithm education is described. The student can both get theoretical knowledge about concepts of algorithms, and test himself/herself with questions in the question bank. There are three types of questions, such as multiple‐choice, true/false, and flowchart designed by the dragging‐and‐dropping method. The main contribution of this application is that the users can design a flowchart from beginning to end on screen by locating any flowchart components provided on the palette. They also have the opportunity to check their own solutions according to the inserted questions and answers in the database. The application was tested on a group of computer engineering undergraduate students from Mus Alparslan University. In that case, the application is evaluated by both an exam and user surveys. The results of the exam show that the presented application had a positive effect on students' success. Besides, the outcomes of the surveys have also given positive feedback.

Timely feedback is important for both teachers and students in teaching and learning practice. Teachers rely on feedback from students to gain a better understanding of their learning effects. Students also need feedback to identify gaps in their knowledge. Conducting in‐class tests is considered an effective way to obtain such feedback. However, traditional testing methods are inflexible and inefficient. In this paper, we introduce iTest, a novel online testing system developed on the popular WeChat platform. With the help of iTest, the teacher organizes an in‐class test conveniently, and the students take the test with their smartphones regardless of which operating systems the smartphones use. When the student answers questions in a test, abundant behavior data for the student are collected. According to the analysis of the behavior data and the testing results, the teacher gains a deeper insight into the learning effect for each student. A weighted knowledge graph is also constructed for each student by virtue of the prerequisite relationships among the knowledge points and the behavior data. On the basis of the weighted knowledge graph, iTest recommends personalized exercises in an appropriate order to each student after the test, which helps to improve the learning effect. Teaching practice in five courses verifies that iTest is effective and efficient in promoting teaching and learning. Both teachers and students have high praise for iTest.

Students Views on the Benefits and Drawbacks of Using Tablets: A South African Case Study

The aim of the research was to explore the views of students on the benefits and drawbacks of using tablets at a rural university located in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. The study adopted qualitative method and employed a case study research design. A total of 155 students from a population of 254 voluntarily partook in the study. The instrument used to collect the data was an open-ended questionnaire. Thematic analysis was used to analyse qualitative data. Findings showed that while students had benefits in the case of learning, doing research and user-friendliness, they also had drawbacks such as distractions, taking photos and watching videos. Overall, it should be understood that every technological device has benefits and drawbacks, so in tablets as well. Therefore, if the students can behave maturely and avoid the off-task behaviours, tablets can be considered as a very effective tool for the learning purpose.
