MRI Measurements of the Cervical Spine and Their Correlation to Pavlov’s Ratio

Abstract: This study shows a poor correlation between Pavlov's ratio and the space available for the cord. Therefore, this ratio cannot be solely relied upon to predict the area changes in that plane of the cervical spinal canal.

“…A ratio of >1 was considered normal, whereas a ratio of <0.8 was considered to represent stenosis. However, some authors have recently reported a poor correlation between the space available for the cord measured on radiographs and the Pavlov ratio [8][9][10][11] . This raises the question of the T Disclosure: The authors did not receive any outside funding or grants in support of their research for or preparation of this work.…”

“…Studies [17] revealed that the average of antero-posterior diameter of the cervical spinal cord (APD2) varies between 5 mm and 6 mm. Our study found out an average of APD2 higher than 11.66 mm ± 0.66 with a variation from 9.1 mm ± 0.67 à 10.5 mm ± 1.5.…”
