MRI manifestations and differentiated diagnosis of postoperative spinal complications

Abstract: To analyze MR manifestations of postoperative spinal complications and investigate the value of MRI in the diagnosis and differentiated diagnosis, 114 cases of spinal postoperative complications were analyzed retrospectively and compared with the clinical data. The results showed that the main postoperative spinal complications included spinal stenosis (n=33, consisting of 21 cases of epidural fibrosis and 12 cases of epidural hematoma or epidural abscess), lack of spinal stability (n=43), infection (n=23, con… Show more

“…Previously, slightly low signal intensity on T1weighted and high signal intensity on both T2weighted and STIR sequences were reported in postoperative infections of disc, vertebrae and paravertebral soft tissues 9 . After contrast administration, heterogenous pattern of enhancement was reported 9 .…”

“…20,21 These images must, however, be interpreted with caution because it can be difficult to distinguish normal postoperative changes from early postoperative infection. 22 In cases of discitis or osteomyelitis, on T1-weighted sequences, infection is observed as an area of low-signal intensity in the disc space or marrow of the vertebral body. The endplates lose their definition and appear hypointense compared with the bone marrow.…”
