MRI for Crohn’s Disease: Present and Future

Abstract: Crohn's disease (CD) is a chronic inflammatory condition with relapsing-remitting behavior, often causing strictures or penetrating bowel damage. Its lifelong clinical course necessitates frequent assessment of disease activity and complications. Computed tomography (CT) enterography has been used as primary imaging modality; however, the concern for radiation hazard limits its use especially in younger population. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging has advantages of avoiding radiation exposure, lower incidence o… Show more

“…Treatment of acute inflammation is via medical approaches while the required treatment for fibrostenotic disease is surgery. 29 , 30 There are various structural and functional factors for assessing active disease in MRE. These factors include wall thickening, higher degree and pattern of enhancement, intensity of T2 mural signal, local lymph node enhancement, higher mesenteric vascularity that are known to be correlated with laboratory data, endoscopic results or histological activity of CD.…”
