MRI evaluation of thermal ablation of tumors with focused ultrasound

Abstract: MRI was used to target and evaluate the tissue effects of focused ultrasound ablation on tumors implanted in the skeletal muscle of rabbits in vivo. First, MRI was used to localize the tumors and plan the ultrasound therapy. Second, temperature-sensitive phase-difference images were acquired to monitor the location of the ultrasound focus and to estimate the effects of temperature rise. After the treatment, the spatial and temporal temperature profiles for defining boundaries of tissue coagulation were calcula… Show more

“…It can monitor induced temperature changes (5,6) and evaluate treatment effects (7). The feasibility of MR-guided FUS to ablate tissue in vivo has been demonstrated in normal tissues (8Ϫ10), experimental animal tumors (11,12), and recently in clinical studies of breast tumors (13,14) and uterine fibroids (15).…”

“…Thermal lesions usually appear with a dark center surrounded by a bright ring on posttherapy MRI (7,18), and many studies have shown that lesion depiction is clear (4,7,10,11,18). However, a few exceptions exist.…”

“…Very small lesions can be targeted by this approach. Therefore, high-resolution imaging techniques, such as MRI, need to be used for accurate detection and monitoring [32,33]. FUS has been used to treat fibroadenomas in nine women under local anesthesia.…”
