Introduction: The knee joint, the largest joint in the body, has several functions which are essential for human beings to walk, run and jump. Primarily, it enables flexion-extension of the lower limb in the sagittal plane. Joint stability during movement is attained by the shape of the articular surfaces, the collateral and cruciate ligaments, the menisci and tendons and muscles crossing the knee joint. (1) The vulnerability of the knee, the largest joint in the body, to direct trauma makes knee injuries very common throughout life. (2) MRI visualizes most components of the knee joint, including articular cartilage, menisci, intra-articular ligaments, synovium, bone marrow, subchondral cysts, and other periarticular and intra-articular lesions that are not detectable by radiography. (4). The prevalence of abnormalities of these different joint components as detected by MRI has been studied in different centers. Such types of studies, to date, have not been done in our country to our knowledge. The aim of this paper is to study prevalence of these abnormalities in the knee joint detected by knee MRI. Objective: To assess the prevalence of abnormalities in the knee joint detected by knee MRI. Methods: Hospital based prospective cross sectional study was conducted on 49 patients who had knee MRI at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital in a period of 7 months from January 1 to August 2016. Patients included here are those who had knee MRI and no history of knee surgery. Results: A total of 49 patients were included in the study out of which 26(53.1%) were male and 23 (46.9%) were female, with a mean age of 43 years (range 17 to 68 years). The three most common pathologies were joint effusion seen in 32(65.3%), bone marrow edema in 22(45.8%) and osteophytes in 22(44.9%). ACL tear was the commonest ligament abnormality occurring in 5 (10.4%) patients. Ten (20.8%) patients had meniscal tear, all involving the medial meniscus with the posterior horn being involved in 8(80%) of these patients. Conclusion: The mean age of our study population was higher than most referenced papers suggestive for possible delayed health seeking. The commonest knee pathologies were similar to other studies. Features of osteoarthritis were seen in higher frequency in our study population. Even though the higher mean age could be the possible cause, further study is recommended to look into the causes. Abnormalities which were seen with higher frequency in those with a history of trauma were also seen in higher frequency in the male population.

Background: The knee is a major weight bearing joint that provides mobility and stability during physical activity as well as balance while standing. Traumatic knee injuries are frequently encountered both in general practice and in the hospital setting. These injuries are often caused by sports activities and may lead to severe pain and disability. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), with its multi-planar capabilities and excellent soft tissue contrast, has established itself as the leading modality for noninvasive evaluation of the sports related knee injuries. Materials and methods: A prospective study was conducted at the department of radiology in BLDE (DU), Shri B M Patil Medical College & RC during the period February 2020 to February 2022. 100 patients (100 knees) were examined, 84 patients were males and 22 patients were females their ages ranging from (16-61) years, presented with various knee joint injuries and were referred from Orthopedics Department BLDE (DU), Shri B M Patil Medical College & RC, Vijayapur, Karnataka. Results: In our study MRI examination was performed on (100) patients with complaints of knee injury.

Introduction. The feasibility of X-ray examination in the diagnosis of gonarthrosis in the knee joint has been increasingly questioned in recent years due to the impossibility of visualizing soft tissue elements; instead, magnetic resonance imaging as a priority method of radiation diagnostics is considered as more appropriate. The goal of this study is to investigate the structural and functional state of the knee joints of patients with monogonarthrosis by comparing the findings obtained by standard X-ray and magnetic resonance imaging. Material and methods. Materials included clinical and radiological examination protocols of 125 patients (54 (43.2%) men and 71 (57.8%) women), aged from 18 - 79 years with monogonarthrosis. Research methods included the clinical assessment of orthopaedic status; X-ray diagnostics: X-ray examination of knee joints with the evaluation of qualitative and quantitative parameters of bone elements; magnetic resonance imaging with a study of the frequency of changes in soft tissues; biochemical investigation of blood serum with determining the C-reactive protein content, which was used as a serological marker of inflammation, and synovial fluid to assess the content of rheumatoid factor; obtained findings were processed statistically. Results and discussion. According to the results of the comprehensive examination, group A with primary monogonarthrosis (118; 94.4%) and group B with gray-positive unspecified rheumatoid monoarthritis (7; 5.6%) were identified. Group A was divided into 2 subgroups: seronegative A1 (71; 56.8%) with normal CRP content and seropositive A2 (47; 37.6%) with CRP > 5 mg/l. Qualitative and quantitative X-ray signs of knee joints in the patients with monogonarthrosis grade 1-2 according to the Kellgren-Lawrence classification revealed asymmetry of the width of the condyles of the femur (81.6%) and tibia (86.4%), asymmetry of the joint space (89.6%) and discordance of joint surfaces (88.8%). MRI scans of the affected knee joint demonstrated a high frequency of synovitis (98.4%), hypertrophy of Hoff fat bodies (92.0%), degenerative lesions of the medial (22.4%) and both (65.6%) menisci, chondromalacia of the patella ( 68.8%), osteophytes (64%), and incomplete rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (64.8%). In subgroups A1 and A2, the X-ray anatomical structure of the knee joints was almost identical without statistical difference in any of the studied parameters. Conclusion. Standard radiography of the knee joint in patients with monogonarthrosis enables to assess the anatomobiomechanical characteristics of the bone elements of the knee joint. According to the MRI results, it is possible to assess the state of the soft tissue components in the knee joint. These imaging techniques complement each other and, to some extent, help to predict the further course of the disease.
