MRI-based detection of renal artery abnormalities related to renal denervation by catheter-based radiofrequency ablation in drug resistant hypertensive patients

Abstract: • Contrast-enhanced MRI provides anatomic evidence of renal artery RF ablation • Temperature increase related to RF ablation induces transient arterial wall inflammation • Morphological effects observed 2 days post RF ablation are not visible after 6 months.

“…To the best of our knowledge, only one two-dimensional (2D) double-inversionrecovery (DIR) turbo-spin-echo (TSE) sequence has been utilized for renal artery wall imaging. 22 However, this imaging sequence could not visualize bilateral renal arteries as well as the adjacent abdominal aorta simultaneously due to 2D acquisition. In addition, because of thicker slice and 2D acquisition, severe partial volume effect can occur when imaging the junctions between the renal arteries and the adjacent abdominal aorta.…”

“…However, low and nonisotropic resolution, small coverage, and low imaging efficiency of these abdominal VWI techniques limit simultaneous assessment of the morphology of small and tortuous renal arteries. To the best of our knowledge, only one two‐dimensional (2D) double‐inversion‐recovery (DIR) turbo‐spin‐echo (TSE) sequence has been utilized for renal artery wall imaging 22 . However, this imaging sequence could not visualize bilateral renal arteries as well as the adjacent abdominal aorta simultaneously due to 2D acquisition.…”
