Importantly, despite advances in neonatal care, a wide range of motor outcomes, including lifelong disability, still occur in surviving very preterm (VPT, ≤32 weeks’ gestation) children ( Balakrishnan et al, 2020 , Dewan et al, 2019 , Evensen et al, 2020 , Johnson and Marlow, 2017 ), with high rates of cerebral palsy (CP, ∼5–15%) and other forms of motor impairment (up to 70%) ( Evensen et al, 2020 ).
