MR Imaging Findings in a Dog With Lumbar Ganglion Cysts

Abstract: Intraspinal cysts of the L6-L7 and L7-S1 articular process joints in a six-year-old neutered female German Shepherd Dog were diagnosed using magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. Histopathology provided a diagnosis of ganglion cysts. Clinical, laboratory, radiographic and MR imaging findings are described. Briefly, radiographic findings revealed lumbarization of the first sacral vertebra, and fusion of the first caudal vertebra to the sacrum. In addition, spondylosis and articular process osteoarthrosis occurred at… Show more

“…There are several types of intraspinal cysts reported in dogs, including arachnoid cysts, synovial cysts, dermoid cysts, and ganglion cysts [5,6,13,15]. Of different types of intraspinal cysts, those having connection to the corresponding intervertebral disc have been termed discal cysts, which is a relatively new clinical entity in humans.…”

“…Two types of intraspinal articular (facet joint) cysts have been described in dogs: synovial cysts and ganglion cysts 28 . Synovial cysts have a synovial-like cell lining and communicate with a joint, whereas ganglion cysts do not 6 .…”

“…Synovial cysts have a synovial-like cell lining and communicate with a joint, whereas ganglion cysts do not 6 . Webb et al 28 recommend that these cysts should be referred to as intraspinal articular cysts until histological confirmation. It is quite possible that cases diagnosed with dorsal compressive spinal lesions on myelography (and attributed only to facet changes or ligamentous and soft tissue hypertrophy), may in fact have synovial cysts contributing significantly to the compression 9 .…”

“…Ganglion cysts are relatively common in humans [7], however, only a small number of cases (including a horse [3] and several dogs [2, 4, 8]) have been reported in the veterinary literature. To our knowledge, MR images of ganglion cysts formation relating to the canine stifle joint have not been previously reported.…”
