MR Imaging and CT of Vascular Anomalies and Connections in Patients with Congenital Heart Disease: Significance in Surgical Planning

Abstract: To plan effective management of congenital heart disease, one needs the clearest understanding of the anatomy. Although echocardiography and angiography are the dominant imaging modalities in patients with congenital heart disease, magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and computed tomography (CT) are valuable noninvasive adjuncts. MR imaging and CT are effective in demonstrating the complex cardiovascular morphology present in congenital heart disease, especially the extracardiac morphology. In patients with tetral… Show more

“…Diagnostic procedures that can be used for vascular ring include chest radiography, barium esophagography, echocardiography, CT, MRI, endoscopy, or angiography. Some studies report that CT or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has become the standard modality and choice for delineating detail of vascular ring (11). The MRA imaging of our patient confirmed the diagnosis and showed balanced type DAA and also the descending thoracic aorta located on the left side.…”

“…Vascular ring division procedures further highlight the preoperative benefit of CT. Robotically assisted totally endoscopic vascular ring division was shown to be a feasible and safe procedure (16) and CT and MRI are used preoperatively to detect vascular aberrations, airway compression, or esophageal impingement (17). Patent ductus arteriosus repair is another procedure that can be done totally endoscopically with a robotic surgical system (16).…”
