MPEG-7 Systems: overview

Abstract: This paper gives an overview of Part 1 of ISO/IEC 15939 (MPEG-7 Systems). It first presents the objectives of the MPEG-7 Systems activity. In the MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 standards, "Systems" referred only to overall architecture, multiplexing, and synchronization. In MPEG-4, in addition to these issues, the Systems part encompasses interactive scene description, content description, and programmability. MPEG-7 brings new challenges to the Systems expertise, such as languages for description representation, binary re… Show more

“…[28] gave an overview of the MPEG-7 description definition language. Besides objectives and specification of MPEG-7 systems, new challenges were discussed in [29], such as the delivery of descriptions either separate or jointly with the audio-visual content, and the like. Recently, media adaptation was achieved by using MPEG-21 digital item adaptation framework [30,31].…”

“…The MPEG-7 Description Definition Language allows to flexibly define MPEG-7 Description Schemes based on XML schema [11]. Finally, how descriptors or description schemes are being stored, accessed or transmitted will be specified in the MPEG-7 Systems specification [12]. …”

“…The purpose of this paper is to provide a broad overview of the MPEG-7 content-based visual descriptors. For an overall overview of the MPEG-7 Standard, more detailed descriptions of MPEG-7 content-based visual, audio and speech descriptors, the reader is referred to the literature in [2], [3] and to the remaining papers of this Special Issue on MPEG-7 in [5]- [12].…”

“…The application areas that benefit from audiovideo content description are multiple, from web search of multimedia contents to media broadcasting, from services in arts (e.g. in art galleries) to home entertainment, to database (of multimedia data) applications [67]- [70]. Descriptions provided by MPEG-7 are independent of the compression method and have to be meaningful just in the context of the considered application.…”
