Patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) often display cognitive deficits. However, current epilepsy therapeutic interventions mainly aim at how to reduce the frequency and degree of epileptic seizures. Recovery of cognitive impairment is not attended enough, resulting in the lack of effective approaches in this respect. In the pilocarpine-induced temporal lobe epilepsy rat model, memory impairment has been classically reported. Here we evaluated spatial cognition changes at different epileptogenesis stages in rats of this model and explored the effects of long-term Mozart music exposure on the recovery of cognitive ability. Our results showed that pilocarpine rats suffered persisting cognitive impairment during epileptogenesis. Interestingly, we found that Mozart music exposure can significantly enhance cognitive ability in epileptic rats, and music intervention may be more effective for improving cognitive function during the early stages after Status epilepticus. These findings strongly suggest that Mozart music may help to promote the recovery of cognitive damage due to seizure activities, which provides a novel intervention strategy to diminish cognitive deficits in TLE patients.

Streszczenie:Poniższy artykuł poświęcony jest zagadnieniom oddziaływania muzyki na ludzki organizm. Celem pracy jest przytoczenie przykładów badań z lat 2000-2010, które wskazują na jej leczniczy wpływ na stan fizyczny i emocjonalny człowieka. Przedstawiono prace poruszające wpływ muzyki w zespole Retta, padaczce, plastyczności mózgu, krążeniu mózgowym, zaburzeniach zachowania i śnie. Ponadto naukowcy wskazują, które obszary mózgowia ulegają aktywacji podczas słuchania muzyki, a także opisują zachowanie się czynności bioelektrycznej mózgu w trakcie ekspozycji na bodziec dźwiękowy.Słowa kluczowe: muzyka, mózg, emocje, czynność bioelektryczna mózgu. Abstract:This article presents the effect of music on human body and contains a review of papers from the last decade, which have confirmed therapeutic effect of music on the physical and emotional condition of patients. The papers cited in the review describe the impact of music in the therapy of Retts syndrome, epilepsy, brain malleability, cerebral circulation, behavioural and sleep disorders. Moreover, scientist indicate, which areas of brain become activated when listening to music and describe bioelectrical behaviour of brain during exposure to sonic stimulus.

Neurologic music therapy (NMT) has fostered recovery from complications in patients suffering from a wide variety of neurologic diseases. Combining music and virtual reality with standard rehabilitation therapies can improve patient compliance and make therapy more enjoyable. Listening to music can reduce epileptiform discharges and enhances brain plasticity. Music produces variations in brain anatomy between musicians and non-musicians. Music therapy is an inexpensive intervention to help post-stroke patients to recover faster and more efficiently if applied soon after the event. There is evidence that incorporating music into a rehabilitation program fosters recovery of hand function, dexterity, spatial movement, cognitive function, mood, coordination, stride length and memory. Learning words as lyrics, melodic intonation therapy and singing can help the aphasic patient to recover faster. NMT therapists are valuable members of the rehabilitation team. NMT has been approved by the World Rehabilitation Federation as an effective evidence based method of treatment.
