MOWLAS: NIED observation network for earthquake, tsunami and volcano

Abstract: National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) integrated the land observation networks established since the 1995 Kobe earthquake with the seafloor observation networks established since the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami as MOWLAS (Monitoring of Waves on Land and Seafloor) in November 2017. The purpose of MOWLAS is to provide comprehensive, accurate, and rapid observation and monitoring of earthquake, tsunami, and volcano events throughout Japan and its offshore areas. MOWLA… Show more

“…Despite these scientific efforts, there is still a high level of uncertainty and low level of accuracy in the estimation of tsunami hazards 58 . Nowadays, the acquisition of the sea level variation in real-time at the earthquake source is only available for submarine sensors networks 59 , 60 (e.g., DONET in Japan and NEPTUNE in Canada). In the analyzed area, Chile has an extensive real-time tide gauges network that provides quality information of tsunami coastal propagation.…”

“…Crustal deformation in Japan can be evaluated with abundant data from seismic and geodetic observation stations (Aoi et al 2020). The crust is affected by perturbations from volcanic and seismic activities (Ueda et al 2013) and surface loads (Heki 2004), including non-tidal ocean loading (Sato et al 2001).…”

“…In this study, spacing varies between 50 and 200 km. This geometry recognizes the ambiguity of recorded signals from large numbers of interior shelf and slope nodes (Hilmo & Wilcock, 2020) as well as the economic infeasibility of such a task as in the Japanese dedicated early warning systems S-net, DONET, and N-net (Aoi et al, 2020).…”
