This work presents the results of an experimental study of the sharpening of planar technical blades used in the fish processing industry. Sharpening was carried out in the grinding process using several environmentally friendly methods of cooling and lubricating the machining zone (MQL method, CAG nozzle, hybrid method that is a combination of MQL and CAG methods, as well as WET flooding method as reference). The purpose of the research was to determine the possibility of reducing the negative environmental impact of the sharpening process of technical blades by minimizing the expenditure of coolant. The application of the MQL method and the hybrid MQL + CAG method provided a very good realization of the lubricating function so that the share of friction of dulled cutting vertices against the workpiece surface is reduced, which manifests itself in the reduction of the grinding force and the correlated grinding power. In the case of grinding under cooled compressed air delivery conditions, the average cutting force was as much as 91.6% higher (F = 22.63 N) compared to the result obtained for the most favorable flooding method, demonstrating the insufficient quality of the blade shaped under such conditions. A comprehensive comparison of test results on grinding power gain, cutting force and surface texture suggests that the most favorable sharpening results were obtained using the environmentally friendly MQL method of cooling and lubricating the grinding zone.

A properly implemented strategy regarding the planer knife regeneration process, may not only restore the original cutting ability of the tool, but even increase its operational quality, including its durability for industrial woodworking processes. This article presents experimental results and discussion in respect of sharpening planer knives with cubic boron nitride grinding wheels. Both the grinding conditions and machining surface quality were analyzed. Application of improper size or loads of abrasive grains may lead to the appearance of grinding burns on a machined surface, or result in a surface with cracks and grooves. The results of the measurements carried out indicate that surfaces with reduced values of roughness and waviness parameters can be obtained, even up to 22% (as in the case of the reduced peak height parameter, Spk) in relation to new knives, prepared at a factory. The value of St and Sds parameters are almost the same as reference knife (deviation up to 3%). Due to machining marks, the total waviness exceeds 33%. Our research also shows that due to the technological quality of the knife surfaces, it is beneficial to use CBN grains with a low depth of cut (ae no more than 0.02 mm), but a moderate or high feed rate (the best choice is about 470 mm/min for vft). Presented results constitute an important know-how for the grinding process with the use of grinders used by operators (like WEINIG Rondamat 980) during the sharpening of planer cutter heads in the wood industry.

The article focuses on the analysis of changes in the surface morphology of planer knives modi ed with four different anti-wear coatings: multilayer, monolithic, monolithic-gradient and gradient. The application of the coatings described in the article on the working surface of planer tools affects the extension of their service life in the range from 153-269%. The main objective of the paper was to determine the effect of vacuum-plasma modi cation of working surfaces of tools intended for machine processing of wooden parts on their geometric structure. The research was carried out on planer knives made of HS6-5-2 high-speed steel and used in industrial conditions in the Wood Industry Plants of KPPD Szczecinek company. The present work sums up the knowledge resulting from the exploitation tests of modi ed knives with the features de ning the morphology of their working surfaces. The paper comprehensively characterizes and compares the working surfaces of planer knives modi ed with four different antiwear coatings with the unmodi ed working surface. 3D surface roughness parameters were used, as well as other characteristics such as isotropy and depths histogram. The knife surface modi ed with a gradient coating (longest life 269%) has a high level of anisotropy. Rose directions with texture directions presents that this kind of coating generated structure with 4.23% value of isotropy. The distribution of ordinates is characterized by high clustering and an apparent negative skewness (Ssk = -0.74). The results of the morphological analyses can be used in the design and quality assessment of thin anti-wear coatings, as well as in development work on how to prepare substrates for their application in the case of technical blades.
