This effort develops and uses a smart stick to help blind individuals walk more safely and avoid hazards. This research paper involved to develop smart stick for blind people to help them to walk safely by avoiding obstructions, and at emergency conditions sent their location to person in charge like a doctor or relatives to help them accordingly. Three ultrasonic sensors are used in the proposed device's architecture to detect obstructions at three different heights, low, mid, and high obstructions using speaker to alert the blind person. An emergency message with the location of the blind person's phone is sent through a mobile app to the doctor or person in charge whenever the designed smart stick's emergency button is touched, or the stick is dropped down. The Arduino Uno platform, Bluetooth model, MPU-6050 3-axis gyroscope as a position sensor, and microSd card module has been used to effectively implement the stick. At the testing stage, the device gave good results. The user received notifications in the form of voice messages and vibrations from the smart stick when it detects things or obstacles in front of them. Additionally, even though they cannot directly activate it, the automated emergency condition has been detection and activated.

Techniques for the detection and recognition of objects have experienced continuous development over recent years, as their application and benefits are so very obvious. Whether they are involved in driving a car, environment surveillance and security, or assistive living for people with different disabilities, not to mention advanced robotic surgery, these techniques are almost indispensable. This article presents the research results of a distance assessment using object detection and recognition techniques. The first is a new technique based on low-cost photo cameras and special sign detection. The second is a classic approach based on a LIDAR sensor and an HQ photo camera. Its novelty, in this case, consists of the concept and prototype of the hardware subsystem for high-precision distance measurement, as well as fast and accurate object recognition. The experimentally obtained results are used for the motion control strategy (directional inverse kinematics) of the robotic arm (virtual prototype) component in special assistive devices designed for visually impaired persons. The advantages of the original technical solution, experimentally validated by a prototype system with modern equipment, are the precision and the short time required for the identification and recognition of objects at relatively short distances. The research results obtained, in both the real and virtual experiments, stand as a basis for the further development of the visually impaired mechatronic system prototype using additional ultrasonic sensors, stereoscopic or multiple cameras, and the implementation of machine-learning models for safety-critical tasks.

Serangan larva lalat buah di dalam daging buah mangga arum manis dapat diketahui tanpa membuka buahnya dengan metode deteksi menggunakan gelombang ultrasonic. Karakteristik gelombang ultrasonic yang digunakan adalah koefisien atenuasi, kecepatan dan zero moment power (Mo). Pada buah mangga utuh koefisien atenuasinya 36,45 Np/M dengan kecepatan gelombang ultrasonic 518,19 m/detik dan zero moment power (Mo) 4,58. Dalam aplikasinya pendugaan kerusakan buah mangga arum manis dengan gelombang ultrasonic pada batas koefisien atenuasi 34,76 Np/M, zero moment power (Mo) 5,60. Pendugaan koefisien atenuasi lebih dari 34,76 Np/M buah mangga dinyatakan utuh, sedangkan pada koefisien atenuasi ≤ 34,76 Np/M diduga telah terserang larva lalat buah. Pada nilai zero moment power (Mo) > 5,6 buah mangga dinyatakan utuh, namun bila Mo nya ≤ 5,60 dinyatakan telah terserang larva lalat buah di dalamnya. Penggunaan sendor ultrasonic HC-SR04 efektif mendeteksi serangan larva lalat buah (Bactrocera dorsalis) di dalam daging buah mangga arum manis pada jarak 6 cm dengan indicator bunyi peringatan pada LCD. Bila nilai tegangan keluaran pada LCD menunjukkan > 30 mV maka buzzer akan berbunyi yang menandakan di dalam buah tersebut telah lunak akibat terserang larva lalat buah atau akibat benturan, sebaliknya bila nilai tegangan keluaran ≤ 30 mV dan buzzel tidak berbunyi mengindikasikan buah mangga masih sehat dan utuh.
