Within the context of an ‘affective turn’ in media studies and the social sciences, this article explores the methodological challenges of researching emotions when studying online videos of conflict. Our study focuses on videos of the Syrian conflict shared on YouTube by the Russian state funded international broadcaster, RT. We propose that the concept of affective investment is a useful pivot between online videos of conflict and audience responses to them. Our study interrogates the role that affective investments play in 1) RT’s YouTube representations of the Syrian conflict, and 2) audience comments on these videos. We draw attention to the important intersections of RT’s representations of the conflict and audiences’ affective investments in those representations, and draw attention to the methodological issues raised. Our empirical focus is two critical junctures in the Syrian conflict: the commencement of Russia’s military intervention; and following the announcement of plans to withdraw Russian troops. We conclude by discussing the utility of affective investments in war when assessing online coverage of conflict, and suggesting avenues for further development.

China communicates strategic narratives about artificial intelligence (AI) in digital media productions to create a shared meaning about its actions and its image in the global race to develop AI. Building upon the literature in emotions and strategic narratives, this study seeks to clarify which emotions are discursively used in China’s international AI narratives, and their function and significance. Specifically, the study investigates emotion discourses in AI-focused videos disseminated on China’s international broadcasting (CGTN YouTube channel). The analysis reveals that pride, hope and fear discourses have multiple functions in China’s international AI narratives on CGTN. Hope is used to represent China as a key competitor in the global AI race, who is catching up to the US. China uses pride to showcase its advances in AI applications, to highlight its transformation of traditional industries, and to identity itself as equal to the US. Fear is used to frame US’s perception of China’s AI developments, to suggest their crisis of confidence, but also to refute the “China threat”. Additionally, the fear discourse is used to deliberate anticipated risks, particularly on job loss and data privacy. These emotion discourses forge China’s identity as a future global AI power. The paper then discusses how these findings contribute to key debates about Chinese discourse and media strategy.

Jelen tanulmányban arra a kérdésre keresem a választ, hogy milyen félelemnarratívák bukkannak elő a migráció és a klímaváltozás jelenségéhez kötődően az adatközlők által elmondottakban. A kutatási kérdések megválaszolásához 69 kreatív interjút készítettem, ahol az interjúkérdéseket projektív technikákkal ötvöztem, a célcsoportot pedig a parlamenti pártokhoz kötődő aktivisták jelentették. A tanulmány felépítése a következő: először a félelem természetére vonatkozó kiindulópontokat tisztázom, azaz szemléltetem, hogy mitől lesz politikai érzelem a félelem. Ezt követően rátérek a kutatás fókuszát képező migrációs félelem és klímaszorongás bemutatására, majd pedig az előbbi specifikus érzelmi típusok kontextualizálásával, vagyis a magyar politikai viszonyok általi értelmezésével igyekszem kézzelfoghatóvá tenni a kutatás témáját. A kontextuális tényezők bemutatása után a módszertani alapvetések elméleti és gyakorlati aspektusait ismertetem, majd az empirikus eredmények részletei következnek és megválaszolom a kutatási kérdéseket. A kutatás legfőbb megállapításai közé tartozik, hogy a migrációt és a klímaváltozást tekintve csak igen ritkán mutatkoznak szélsőségesebb ideológiai álláspontok a megkérdezettek között. A migrációt illetően a legfőbb különbség a kormánypárti és az ellenzéki interjúalanyok között az, hogy míg a Fidesz-pártiak esetében ténylegesen félelemként jelenik meg a bevándorlás, addig az ellenzékiek elsősorban megoldandó problémaként tekintenek rá. A második téma esetében lényegében teljes konszenzus uralkodott az interjúalanyok körében arról, hogy a klímaváltozás korunk egyik legfontosabb kihívása, nagyobb érzelmi bevonódás azonban nem igazán jellemezte az adatközlőket. A legfontosabb különbség a kormánypártiak és az ellenzékiek között abban mutatkozott meg, hogy a Fideszes interjúalanyok (és ugyanúgy a jobboldaliak, csak kevésbé karakteresen) nagy eséllyel fogalmaztak meg negatív véleményeket a zöldpolitikát/ zöldaktivizmust illetően, amely egyébként sokszor egyfajta életmódkritikában kristályosodott ki (elvadult vegánok).
