Movement of Several Herbicides Through Excised Plant Tissue

Abstract: Uptake and movement of various herbicides and auxins by bean (Phaseolus vulgarisL.) petiole sections were studied. Isopropylm-chlorocarbanilate (chlorpropham) was the most mobile of the compunds studied, followed in order of decreasing mobility by: indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), 3-amino-s-triazole (amitrole), (2,4-dichlorophenoxy)acetic acid (2,4-D), 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1-methoxy-1-methylurea (linuron), and 3-amino-2,5-dichlorobenzoic acid (amiben). Amiben immobilization may have been due to glucoside formatio… Show more

“…Extent of movement was similar in bean petiole, root, and hypocotyl sections. As shown in a previous paper (26), amiben was readily absorbed into the tissue sections, but none moved into the receptor disks of untreated tissue. It is possible that amiben is conjugated upon entering the cytoplasm and that this conjugate is irreversibly moved across the tonoplast into the vacuole.…”

“…The petiole sections were placed apical end down on the donor disk for basipetal translocation and basal end down for acropetal translocation, thus allowing for movement of the labeled compound against gravity in both cases. A more thorough discussion of the experi mental system used is presented by Taylor and Warren (26).…”

“…Several investigators have reported the movement of CIPC into seeds (Rieder et al, 1970) through excised petiole sections (Taylor and Warren, 1970). Prendeville et al (1968) showed that CIPC moved in intact plants, but that it did not move basipetally to any degree.…”
