Movement Notation Revisited: Syntax of the Common Morphokinetic Alphabet (CMA) System

Abstract: Advances in the study of non-verbal behavior and communication have generated a need for movement transcription systems capable of incorporating continuous developments in visual and computer technology. Our research team has been working on the construction of a common morphokinetic alphabet (CMA) for the systematic observation of daily life activities. The project, which was launched several years ago, was designed to create a system for describing and analyzing body motion expression, physical activity, and… Show more

“…This methodological approach allows the systematic analysis of spontaneous behavior in a natural environment using a set of dimensions and categories to evaluate behavior changes and temporal patterns using T-pattern analysis (Magnusson, 1996, 2000, 2018; Casarrubea et al, 2018), lag sequential analysis (Bakeman and Quera, 2011; Quera, 2018) or polar coordinate analysis (Sackett, 1980; Morillo et al, 2018; Rodríguez-Medina et al, 2018). Observational methodology is well established in several fields (Blanco-Villaseñor et al, 2010; Anguera and Hernández-Mendo, 2016; Arias-Pujol and Anguera, 2017; Cerezo et al, 2017; Escolano-Pérez et al, 2017; Izquierdo and Anguera, 2018; Pérez-Tejera et al, 2018; Santoyo and Mendoza, 2018). Nonetheless, their use to provide feedback as an intervention component within an occupational MMH training, as well as their use to assess behavioral change derived from training is innovative.…”

“…On the other hand, the micro-analytical record of visible and audible communicative interpersonal behavior (stages 1 and 2 of the quantitizing process) that includes the use of highly elaborate notational systems (Anguera and Izquierdo, 2006 ; Izquierdo and Anguera, 2018 ), makes it possible to identify the linguistic resources of the interlocutors when they have a common or specialized exchange. For example, the linguistic movement markers that correspond to fleeting comments produced from the listener position, the turn and turn change markers, expressive communicative acts, symbolic gestures performed with the body, socio-affective adjectives, etc.…”
