Movement ecology of the carnivorous woolly false vampire bat (Chrotopterus auritus) in southern Mexico

Abstract: Deforestation is a critical threat to bats. The woolly false vampire bat Chrotopterus auritus is a carnivorous bat that is both an indicator species for well-conserved forests and a threatened species in Mexico and other countries due to deforestation. We currently lack the information needed to assess the effects of forest fragmentation and destruction on their populations and to develop plans for their conservation. We used GPS loggers to study the movement patterns of C … Show more

“…We predict sampled carnivores and N. magdalenensis to have high DNE and OPCR values and low RFI values, following general trends found in other mammals. Based on previous comparisons of body proportions with modern relatives, we predict N. magdalenensis 's BM to be intermediate between those of C. auritus (~70 g; Vleut et al 2019) and V. spectrum (~150 g; Amador et al 2019).…”

“…However, none of the restoration sites in our study were more than 130 m away from forest edge. Studies on the movements of individual phyllostomines are limited (Bernard & Fenton, 2003; Jones et al, 2017; Vleut et al, 2019), and none have attempted to measure their movement at such a small scale. For the aerial insectivores, the type of restoration treatment significantly affected detection rate.…”
