Moveable Production Systems for Sustainable Development and Trade: Limitations, Opportunities and Barriers

Abstract: It has been claimed that technological advances will make it possible to make anything anywhere and to do so sustainably. In particular, making anything anywhere would increase the diversity of locations and participants involved in production, with positive effects for sustainability. For example, increasing the diversity of locations can reduce the long-distance transportation of materials and goods, which can improve the ecological sustainability of production. At the same time, increasing the diversity of … Show more

“…As confirmed by the results, Cluster 1 enterprises have the highest level, and they are characterized by a high level of Industry 4.0 deployment and have all the technology levels that they use successfully. These conclusions are also supported by a Romanian study on barriers to deployment [6], when the importance of technology for Industry 4.0 is emphasized by Reference [89], an article by a Finnish author on production systems. Brozzi [90] used self-assessment tools for Industry 4.0 readiness in SMEs with current and expected levels of digitalization.…”

“…Moreover, as the research of the North Jutland region shows, a considerable challenge for regions located far away from a metropolis may be the distance from important markets and industrial partners [78]. Other authors claim that even though industry 4.0 was theoretically supposed to make it possible to produce everything in any place, the production places have remained unchanged for years [79] and that the role of industrial clusters will not diminish [80][81][82][83]. This seems to be caused by the fact that the benefits of the agglomeration are still very important for many companies.…”

“…Striving for sustainability, customization, process intensification, and modularity have affected the status quo of traditional networks by introducing the possibility to mobilize production. Owing to technological improvements, the relocation of production setups [68], or their further integration in existing setups, the locational availability of products increases. Moreover, this reduces transportation efforts required for the delivery of materials and diversifies contributing parties.…”
