Abstract: Due to the global era, bachelorthesis abstracts written by non-native English speakers (Indonesians) from non-English departments in Indonesia are usually written in two languages, i.e. Indonesian and English. “…The next one is research that compares the rhetorical move structure across disciplines (e.g., Gani et al, 2021;Juanda & Kurniawan, 2020;Nikpei, 2016;Ramadhini et al, 2021) as a way to see the difference between several disciplines. Lastly, some research compares abstract discourse patterns written by writers with various backgrounds (e.g., Mohsenzadeh, 2013;Putri et al, 2021;Suryani & Rismiyanto, 2019). Even though they have different focuses in data, their main goal is to see what move or discourse pattern is used in each text.…”

“…This study also aims to compare and identify commonalities and differences between abstracts written in English and Indonesian. This study used Hyland's (2000) five-move analysis model as the main instrument because it has been predominately used in many research studies that focus on the manifestation of discourse patterns (Amnuai, 2019a(Amnuai, , 2019bKurniawan et al, 2019;Suryani & Rismiyanto, 2019). Using this model, the findings from this study are expected to produce a clearer picture of (1) the development of abstract writing skills from postgraduate to doctoral dissertation levels along with the factors that influence it, and (2) differences in the manifestation of abstract discourse patterns at each level and language.…”

“…An abstract is the representation of a larger work in the form of selfcontained, short and powerful statement (Muhartoyo, 2016). Therefore, an abstract is one of the important factors in determining whether the reader will continue to read it or not (Kurniawan, Lubis, Suherdi, & Danuwijaya, 2019;Suryani & Rismiyanto, 2019). The main function of abstract is to give the reader reflection of the article and decide whether to read the complete text or to evaluate that a piece of research us worth presenting or publishing (Bondi & Sanz, 2014).…”

“…Lastly, researchers tried to compare abstracts discourse patterns by writers with various backgrounds, such as mother tongue (Mohsenzadeh, 2013;Xiao & Cao, 2013;Zamani & Ebadi, 2016), academic writing proficiency level or region. Previous studies mostly analysed abstract discourse patterns in scientific works, which were mostly taken from student undergraduate theses (Male, 2018;Suryani & Rismiyanto, 2019), but not many studies have focused on the manifestation of abstract discourse patterns in master's theses and dissertations of lecturers who have doctoral degrees.…”
