Movable Hollow Nanoparticles as Reactive Oxygen Scavengers

Abstract: Hemin-loaded narrow-walled mesoporous silica nanoparticles (hemin-NMSNs) as movable nanoparticles models were guided into the cells for the removal of intracellular ROS. These autonomous motions with random direction greatly enhanced the efficiency of ROS removal at low doses and alleviates safety concerns related to the potential toxicity of high doses of hemin.

“…Characterization of Self-Assembled GNC-DNA Complexes. The specific tumor microenvironment (19,20) is usually exploited by in situ imaging because of the presence of relatively high amounts of molecules that act as reducing agents for GNC syntheses, such as reactive oxygen species (ROS), L-glutathione, and NADPH (21)(22)(23). In the present study, we utilized natural doublestranded DNA (dsDNA) from herring sperm (<50 bp) to explore the usage of bioresponsive self-assembled biosynthetic GNC-DNA fluorescent complexes in cancer.…”

“…In the present study, we utilized natural doublestranded DNA (dsDNA) from herring sperm (<50 bp) to explore the usage of bioresponsive self-assembled biosynthetic GNC-DNA fluorescent complexes in cancer. Based on a previously published study (19), we used a suitable concentration of gold precursor solution (20 μM pH = 7.2) without evident cytotoxicity in HeLa (cervical carcinoma), A549 (lung cancer), and L02 (normal hepatocyte) cells (SI Appendix, Fig. S1).…”

“…20,21 In contrast, nanomaterial-based articial enzymes such as nanoceria, mesoporous silica and carbon clusters have the ability to scavenge ROS and have been used for ROS clearance and maintaining the redox balance in the cell and preventing it from oxidative damage in vivo. [22][23][24] In comparison with natural enzymes, the nanomaterial-based articial enzymes display better stability and are much more cost-efficient. Among them, the organic nanomaterials composed of biocompatible components such as peptides are promising for AD therapy.…”

“…The novel optical, electronic, magnetic, optothermal, and mechanical properties of NP assemblies are attributable to the coupling of and cooperation among individual NPs (15). NP assemblies have great potential in practical applications, such as sensing (16), energy storage (17,18), ultrastrong materials (19), biodegradable plastics (20), adsorption (21), catalysis (22), and therapies (23,24).…”
