Abstract-In Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), multichannel coil arrays are increasingly being used to improve Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) in order to increase spatial and/or temporal image resolution. Recent decoupling technique allows conception of two-channel surface transceiver coil arrays; this technique based on common conductor does not require additional preamplifier for the decoupling between elements. In this case the coil array loops are directly connected to the independent transmit/receive switches and preamplifiers of the MR system. Using this common conductor decoupling technique, a topology of a four-channel coil array was developed and described in this paper. A four-channel surface receiver coil array was designed to perform the simultaneous acquisition of both rat knee joints at 7T. Without the use of additional preamplifiers, a good decoupling between channels was obtained and very high spatial resolution 3D images with a voxel size of 49 × 49 × 98 µm

In recent years, the phased array coil technology has found more and more its way in applications at high field small animal systems. However, these coil arrays are usually based on simple loops and are mostly used in rat imaging studies only. Mouse imaging studies are limited to the use of linear arrays or volume resonators. Recently, a novel surface coil design based on the hole-slot magnetron's geometry was introduced to MRI. The hole-slot magnetron is a vacuum tube which operates e.g. as a high frequency oscillator in radar applications. It has been shown that the magnetron surface coil allows for a deeper RF penetration than a conventional coil both at 1.5 and 4 Tesla. The objective of this work was to find an optimal loop coil based on the hole-slot magnetron geometry in order to build a volume phased array for cardiac imaging with improved SNR on the centre of the sample. To achieve this goal, different magnetron loops were simulated and evaluated towards their performance. Based on these results the best performing hole-slot magnetron geometries were built and compared. In addition, the magnetron loop (referred as hole-slotted coil) with the best sensitivity was compared with conventional simple loop geometries. Furthermore, a four channel hole-slotted phased array based on the magnetron's design theory was built, evaluated and compared with a conventional four channel array. The four channel hole-slotted array shows improved RF penetration depth over the four channel array with simple loop geometry

Multi-turn spiral surface coils are constructed in flat and cylindrical arrangements and used for high field (7.1 T) mouse cardiac MRI. Their electrical and imaging performances, based on experimental measurements, simulations, and MRI experiments in free space, and under phantom, and animal loading conditions, are compared with a commercially available birdcage coil. Results show that the four-turn cylindrical spiral coil exhibits improved relative SNR (rSNR) performance to the flat coil counterpart, and compares fairly well with a commercially available birdcage coil. Phantom experiments indicate a 50% improvement in the SNR for penetration depths ≤ 6.1 mm from the coil surface compared to the birdcage coil, and an increased penetration depth at the half-maximum field response of 8 mm in the 4-spiral cylindrical coil case, in contrast to 2.9 mm in the flat 4-turn spiral case. Quantitative comparison of the performance of the two spiral coil geometries in anterior, lateral, inferior, and septal regions of the murine heart yield maximum mean percentage rSNR increases of the order of 27–167% in vivo post-mortem (cylindrical compared to flat coil). The commercially available birdcage outperforms the cylindrical spiral coil in rSNR by a factor of 3–5 times. The comprehensive approach and methodology adopted to accurately design, simulate, implement, and test radiofrequency coils of any geometry and type, under any loading conditions, can be generalized for any application of high field mouse cardiac MRI.
