Mould fabrication for polymer optics

Abstract: This work is focused on the process chain for mould fabrication for the injection moulding of optical components. To achieve a good form and surface quality on steel moulds is the intention; the new process chain should consist of just 3 steps instead of 5; nickel plating and diamond turning are superseded. Manual polishing is replaced by robot polishing.

“…Molds referring to cavity 1 or 2 were polished with different techniques (cavity 1 corresponds to polishing group 1 and cavity 2 respectively) to test if the measurement setup was able to resolve geometry changes due to surface polishing and to discriminate between different techniques. Cavity 1 was rotation -symmetrically polished with a round polishing mask and a manual finishing through an experienced polisher [1]. Cavity 2 was manual polished with different types of adapted polishing heads (various sizes, materials and geometries).…”

“…Occupational eye wear such as safety shields and goggles are usually manufactured by polycarbonate injection molding [1] [2] [3]. A typical molding tool (referred to as tool) for safety goggles includes two or more cavities (hollow of the tool where the liquid plastic is to be injected) for simultaneous production of multiple identical parts in one step.…”

“…They were rotationally polished with a round polishing mask and a manual finishing through an experienced polisher. Cavity one was polished with a fully automated polishing technique (robot with polishing head) [15,16]. The polishing path was arranged in a circular manner.…”

“…A particular type of plastic injection moulding is the production of plastic optics. The quality of the moulded products depends on the surface quality and shape deviations of the respective mould (Speich & Boerret, 2011). The produced moulds do not always have a spherical shape; some moulds are also cylindrical shaped .…”
