Motor Developmental Delay After Cardiac Surgery in Children With a Critical Congenital Heart Defect: A Systematic Literature Review and Meta-analysis

Abstract: Purpose: To systematically review evidence regarding the severity and prevalence of motor development in children with a critical congenital heart defect (CCHD) without underlying genetic anomalies. Summary of Key Points: Twelve percent of all included studies reported abnormal mean motor developmental scores, and 38% reported below average motor scores. Children with single-ventricle physiology, especially those with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, had the highest severity and prevalence of motor delay, part… Show more

“…32 Sensorimotor systems are among the first brain areas to develop 15 and serve as the foundation for subsequent development and learning as infants use movement to interact with their environments. 33,34 Motor development is commonly impaired in infants with CHD, 8,29,35 particularly in those with critical CHD where over half of infants exhibit gross motor delay. 8,36 Feeding difficulties are also observed in infants with CHD 10,29 and serve as an early sign of later impairments, including language delay.…”

“…Over recent decades, delays in motor abilities using measures that combine both gross and fine motor scores have commonly been reported in toddlers after early complex cardiac surgery. [1][2][3] Impaired gross motor abilities for pre-school and school-age children with CHDs have been reported, with concern for low tone and poor balance skills. [4][5][6] Mild to moderate improvement in motor function has been suggested to occur between age 1 and 6 years.…”
