Aim:The aim of the study was threefold: 1) to validate and analyze the psychometric properties of the Polish version of the Caring Ability Inventory (CAI-PL); 2) to analyze the impact of the motivation for choosing a career in nursing on the ability to provide care; and 3) to determine whether previous experience in providing care as part of volunteer work affected respondents' caring ability. Design: A cross-sectional study. Methods: The study was performed in accordance with the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology guidelines. Data were collected using the online form between May and July 2021. Construct validity and reliability of the instrument were tested using SPSS 25.0.Results: A satisfactory level of CAI content validity was observed; the CAI-PL was composed of 36 items and the Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the entire scale was 0.715, confirming high internal consistency. The mean score obtained by respondents on the Caring Ability Inventory was 189.55. Conclusion: The study showed satisfactory psychometric properties of the Polish version of the Caring Ability Inventory, confirming its potential to measure nurses' level of caring abilityboth in education and research.

Introduction. The decision on a course of study related to the profession of choice is a milestone in many people’s life. The choice of nursing is determined by various reasons and values which can influence both the involvement and satisfaction of students with their education and later, professional life.Aim. To learn the reasons and values behind choosing nursing education.Material and methods. The survey was performed in January 2019 on a group of 223 1st grade nursing students at the Medical University of Warsaw. The survey used an original questionnaire and the standardized List of Personal Values (PVL) by Z. Jurczyński.Results. Within the group of participating students – 34.1% chose nursing as their first recruitment choice of studies. The majority justified their choice with the will to help others and the need to acquire higher education. The personal values declared by the students were mostly love, friendship and good health, physical and mental fitness. The meaning of ”good material conditions” as a token of personal happiness (p=0.005) was more often declared by students for whom nursing was not the first choice of education.Conclusions. Only a third of the respondents chose nursing education consciously. The most commonly declared reason behind the choice of nursing profession was the will to help other people. Students, who chose nursing as their one and only education less frequently declared the importance of good material conditions as a symbol of personal happiness.

Level of knowledge about prehospital management of a patient with chest pain among nursing and midwifery students

Aim: To assess the level of knowledge about chest pain and the management procedure in patients with chest pain among nursing and midwifery students. Material and methods: The study was conducted in 276 nursing and midwifery students at the Medical University of Lodz, Poland. Results: First-year first-cycle program students constituted the largest group among the respondents (114 people), whereas the smallest group included third-year first-cycle program students. Classes attended in the course of university studies were the most common source of knowledge about chest pain in the surveyed group (62.7%, 173 subjects), whereas 6.9% of the respondents (19 individuals) reported having no knowledge about chest pain. Depending on their age, the surveyed students most often assessed their level of knowledge about prehospital management of a patient with chest pain as satisfac¬tory - 45.3% (125 respondents), and least frequently as very good - 4% (11 respondents). As regards the characteristic symptoms of myocardial infarction pain, the students most often indicated the correct answer, i.e. retrosternal pain (81.8%, 226 respondents), while 18.2% (50) of the students did not know the right answer. Conclusions: Cardiovascular diseases are the main cause of death in Poland, therefore, especially students of every medical field at the beginning of the education cycle should acquire knowledge and skills in the field of pre-hospital management of a patient with chest pain.
