The primary aim of this study was to assess potential barriers and motivators to blood and cord blood donation among African-American women. A telephone survey of AfricanAmerican women, ages 18-30 years, in the St. Louis metropolitan area was performed. The survey was administered by trained telemarketing personnel using a ComputerAssisted Direct Interview (CADI) system. One hundred sixty-two women were surveyed. Common barriers to blood donation were inconvenience of donor sites (19%), fear of needles (16%), and too much time required to donate (15%). Potential motivators were increasing awareness of need for blood (43%), increasing the number of convenient donor locations (19%), and encouragement by spiritual leaders to have blood drives at their church (17%). Lack of awareness was the only identified barrier to cord blood donation. Most women surveyed (88%) indicated that they definitely or probably would donate cord blood. Strategies to increase the proportion of African-American blood and cord blood donations may include educating potential donors about the process and benefits of donation to particular patient populations and engaging church leadership in supporting blood and cord blood donations. Recruiting safe, volunteer blood donors requires understanding motivations for donating and knowledge and attitudes about HIV. We surveyed 1,600 persons presenting for blood donation at a large blood bank in São Paulo, Brazil using a self-administered, structured questionnaire, and classified motivations into three domains as well as categorizing persons by HIV test-seeking behavior. Motivations, in descending order, and their significant associations were: "altruism": female gender, volunteer donor and repeat donor status; "direct appeal": female gender, repeat donor status and age 21-50 years; "self-interest": male gender, age under 20 years, first-time donor status and lower education. HIV test-seekers were more likely to give incorrect answers regarding HIV risk behavior and blood donation and the ability of antibody testing to detect recent HIV infections. Altruism is the main motivator for blood donation in Brazil; other motivators were associated with specific demographic subgroups. HIV test-seeking might be reduced by educational interventions.

Este artigo objetiva compreender os fatores motivacionais que influenciam os indivíduos a doarem sangue, com a finalidade de subsidiar as ações de marketing social orientadas à captação de novos doadores. Com base em uma revisão teórica, um modelo de hipóteses foi elaborado, para análise de influências e interações de construtos na formação da predisposição das pessoas a serem doadores de sangue. Foi feito o levantamento de campo por meio de um questionário estruturado, junto a uma amostra de 346 pessoas. Para análise, foram usadas técnicas de análise descritiva, avaliação de consistência psicométrica e modelagem de equações estruturais com estimação por mínimos quadrados parciais. Como resultados, verificou-se principalmente que há uma influência negativa do medo e positiva do grupo de referência na predisposição dos sujeitos em doar sangue. Isso indicou que as ações de marketing social para a doação de sangue são mais eficientes em incentivar novos doadores se mantiverem foco nesses dois fatores.
